Welcome to Pattie’s Blog: Where Black Culture, Family, and Health Meet

By Patricia N. McKenzie, RN, Author @pattiesblog

Patricia N. McKenzie, RN
There comes a moment in life when you realize that silence helps no one.

For years, I have watched too many women struggle quietly. Too many mothers blamed. Too many children misunderstood. Too many families doing their best with very little support.

I have listened to stories in clinics, kitchens, living rooms, and hospital corridors — stories filled with strength, exhaustion, love, fear, hope, and resilience.

That is why Pattie’s Blog was born!

THE POWER OF KNOWLEDGE

This space exists to speak life into our families.

To educate without judging.
To uplift without pretending.
To tell the truth with compassion.

I believe deeply in the power of knowledge. I believe in prevention. I believe in community. And I believe that when Black families are healthy — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually — everything changes.

MOTHER'S, CHILDREN & FAMILY HEALTH

Here, we will talk honestly about women’s health, from reproductive care and maternal wellness to chronic illnesses that affect our community at higher rates. We will discuss children’s health in ways that empower parents instead of overwhelming them. We will explore nutrition, mental wellness, stress, sleep, exercise, and the everyday choices that quietly shape our futures.

But Pattie’s Blog is more than medical talk.

It is about family life — the real kind.

The kind with laughter and arguments.
The kind with victories and setbacks.
The kind where love keeps showing up even when things feel heavy.

We will talk about relationships, parenting, single motherhood, fatherhood, grandparents raising grandchildren, blended families, and the beauty and complexity of building a home in today’s world.

BLACK CULTURE

We will also celebrate Black culture — our traditions, our resilience, our creativity, our faith, our humor, our ancestral wisdom. Our culture is medicine. Our stories are medicine. Our joy is medicine.

This blog is not about perfection.

It is about progress.

It is about learning together.

It is about choosing health even when it’s hard.
Choosing rest even when the world says grind.
Choosing love even when trauma tries to speak louder.

If you are a mother, father, caregiver, auntie, uncle, grandparent, or simply someone who loves our people — you belong here.

If you have ever felt unheard in a doctor’s office…
If you have ever Googled symptoms at 2 a.m.…
If you have ever worried about your child and didn’t know where to turn…
If you have ever carried your family on your back and felt tired…

WELCOME TO PATTIE'S BLOG!

WELCOME HOME!

This space is for you.

Pattie’s Blog is a community.

A place to learn.
A place to heal.
A place to grow.

Thank you for being here.
Thank you for walking this journey with me.

Together, we rise.
Together, we heal.
Together, we build healthy families and strong futures.

Welcome home. 💛

ABOUT THE BOOK: Ghetto Life: Struggles, Survival, and Hope in Kingston, Jamaica
By Patricia N. McKenzie, RN

  • A Memoir of Poverty, Violence, and Resilience in the Jamaican Capital
  • Stories of Faith, Survival, and Triumph in the Urban Ghetto
  • From Despair to Determination in Kingston’s Harshest Streets
A powerful and deeply personal reflection on the resilience of a forgotten community, Ghetto Life chronicles the daily battles, survival strategies, and enduring spirit of those living in Kingston’s urban ghettos. From pothole-filled streets to homes lit only by streetlamps, this gripping narrative explores poverty, discrimination, and the overlooked brilliance of people striving for a better life.

Through heartfelt storytelling, Patricia McKenzie honours the unsung heroes—mothers, fathers, students, vendors, and dreamers—who rise above adversity. She paints vivid portraits of community unity, cultural pride, and the pursuit of education against all odds. At once a memoir, a social commentary, and a call to action, this book reminds us:
where you come from does not define where you can go.

Perfect for readers of social justice, memoir, Caribbean life, and those who believe in the power of hope.
